AustenFest: Celebrating Jane Austen’s Life and Times

Join us for an afternoon with three tracks of Austen-themed programming. Our “Jane Austen meets Downton Abbey” was such a hit last year that we were invited to take over three conference rooms at the San Mateo Library. We will have presentations, Regency dance instruction, panels, and hand-on demos of regency activities. Bonus: the Library will be screening three Austen-related films during March. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in nineteenth century England is faced with a new challenge, an army of undead zombies.

These films are a prelude to the AUSTENFEST event to be held at the Main Library on March 25.

A Celebration of Jane Austen, Noe Valley Word Week 2017

Monday, March 20, 7-8:30 PM, Umpqua Bank, 3938 24th St., San Francisco

Jane Austen lived and wrote 200 years ago, but her books are still avidly read and her plain life studied today. What is it about her novels and Jane herself that continue to fascinate readers? Danine Cozzens, co-chair of the Jane Austen Society, Northern California Region, will speak to this point at Word Week’s A Celebration of Jane Austen. In addition, four local authors will read from some of Jane’s finished work. New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors Cara Black and Mary McNear will read from Northanger Abbey and Pride and Prejudice, poet and novelist Marylee McNeal from Mansfield Park, and short story author Richard May from Persuasion. Join us for an afternoon enjoying one of the sensory delights of Jane Austen’s world: Music. “Of All Subjects My Delight”: Music and Jane Austen will feature a programme exploring music from Austen’s era as well as music inspired by Austen’s works. Part info-tainment and part music recital, “Music and Jane Austen” promises to give fans of Austen’s work a keener understanding of the music in Austen’s world and Austen in the music created since her time.

Saturday, June 17, 2017:
Lavender Farm picnic in Escalon with JASNA Greater Sacramento 

We’ll be car pooling down to Escalon to Alice Taylor’s Lavender Farm for a picnic! In preparation we suggest reading Jane Austen’s description of the Box Hill Picnic in Emma: Volume III Chapter VII.  As we finalize plans we’ll be sending out an email with sign up information, car pool meeting places and box lunch options.


The 2nd Annual Jane Austen Festival, known as “Jane Fest“, hosted by The Jane Austen Society of North America, Central California Region, will be held on September 23, 2017, from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm at the Hilton Garden Inn, Clovis, CA.
