Our Next Meeting

6 September 2008, 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church
330 Ravenswood Avenue
Menlo Park, CA 94025 (map)

Born in a rectory, the daughter of a clergyman, Jane Austen was a devout Anglican her entire life. She wrote several evening prayers for her family's use; and, as you can see from the following excerpt, even in these passages, her insight into human nature is acute.

We bless thee for every comfort of our past and present existence, for our health of body and of mind and for every other source of happiness which thou hast bountifully bestowed on us and with which we close this day, imploring their continuance from thy fatherly goodness, with a more grateful sense of them, than they have hitherto excited. May the comforts of every day, be thankfully felt by us, may they prompt a willing obedience of thy commandments and a benevolent spirit toward every fellow-creature. -- Evening prayer by Jane Austen

At our fall meeting, please join us as we explore how Jane Austen's faith manifests itself in our favorite author's works. We meet, appropriately, at an Episcopal church where Carolyn Emerson will present us with some new insights on this dimension of Jane's personality. Additionally, our Reader's Theater will perform, and Tara Munier will illuminate a line from Emma referring to the marriage service, where, "M. takes N.".

There's no registration or fee for this event -- your membership dollars at work again. However, feel free to bring donations to our tea-inspired potluck refreshments buffet.

Parking at Holy Trinity is free and abundant. Public transit is available via CalTrain. The Menlo Park Caltrain station is a short walk from the church.

If you'd like to carpool, either as a driver or a passenger, please e-mail our Coachman's Bell at newsletterjasnanorcal.org
