Tuesday, May 14, 6:308:00 pm (PT) on Zoom

Join us to discuss The Jane Austen Remedy: It Is a Truth Universally Acknowledged That a Book Can Change a Life by Ruth Wilson, an empowering memoir of a life reclaimed through reading.

Ruth Wilson first encountered Pride and Prejudice in the 1940s and has returned to Jane Austen countless times over the course of a long life. After her sixtieth birthday, she took the radical decision to retreat from her conventional married life and live alone while confronting feelings of loss and unhappiness. As Wilson read between the lines of Austen’s six major novels, she felt herself reclaiming her voice and her sense of self.

An uplifting memoir of love, self-acceptance and the curative power of reading, The Jane Austen Remedy is an inspirational account of nine vivid decades, unravelling memories and searching for small truths to help explain the arc of a life that has been both ordinary and extraordinary.

Discussion questions will be sent to registrants before the meeting. Register below.

We are thrilled to be joined by Relative Strangers author Ann Kim!

A timely spin on Sense and Sensibility, Relative Strangers is a wry and entertaining re-imagining starring two half-Korean sisters and is set at a cancer wellness retreat center in Northern California to give the classic tale a modern, feminist twist, touching on themes of blended families, race, class, and wealth.

Ann Kim is a retired Berkeley- and Harvard-educated lawyer, long-time cancer survivor, and immigrant from Seoul, South Korea. She is the author of contemporary book club fiction including her 2020 debut novel, A Good Family, and the newly released Relative Strangers.
