SUMMARY:Jane Austen's "Persuasion" Song Cycle
DESCRIPTION:What did we do on our CoVid quarantine vacation? With a baseline of Beethoven’s glorious chamber music\, director/lyricist Emily King created a series of 9 songs which capture\, each in their unique way\, the flavor\, plot and characters of Persuasion\, Jane Austen’s last completed\, least read and most fiercely defended novel. Twelve remarkable singer actors and eleven musicians are creating a wholly original\, completely Pastiche way of bringing you back in time with our latest technology. Diverse and distanced\, gorgeous and witty\, liberating talent from Canada to Israel and all over the US\, for Austen\, Beethoven and musical theater fans all over the world. Ludwig calls the tune as we celebrate Jane Austen\, and her ability to create happy endings in her stories\, when real life so often sadly disappoints.

SUMMARY:Jane Austen\, Emma\, and Music
DESCRIPTION:‘Without music\, the world is a blank’ says Mrs. Elton. Eighteenth century musicales or parlor performances included the traditional Irish air\, a song from a ballad opera\, piano sonatas\, or a setting of a popular dance tune. They were frequent occurrences in society and it is reflected in Austen’s personal collections and in her work. In this lecture on Jane Austen’s Emma\, join Grand Central Library and NYPL Music staff for a look into Jane Austen’s relationship with music and how it affected her writing.

SUMMARY:Clergy in the novels of Jane Austen
DESCRIPTION:To speak to us at this event\, we are delighted to welcome our member David Richardson who will give a talk on clergy in the novels of Jane Austen. David will speak about the part that clergy play in the novels written by the daughter of a parson\, and sister to two others. He will focus on five in particular: ‘the sybarite\, the suitors and the spouses’.He offers two questions that you might like to think about in advance: \n\n\n\n●How many Austen heroines fall in love with a clergyman? (Clue: remember the advice from schooldays – read the question carefully.)●Who are the two best-known clergymen in English fiction? (Clue: one is an Austen character; the other is not.) \n\n\n\nThis event will be free of charge. Please e-mail north@jasoc.org.uk to register interest and receive ID and passcode.
