SUMMARY:Jane Austen\, Emma\, and Music
DESCRIPTION:‘Without music\, the world is a blank’ says Mrs. Elton. Eighteenth century musicales or parlor performances included the traditional Irish air\, a song from a ballad opera\, piano sonatas\, or a setting of a popular dance tune. They were frequent occurrences in society and it is reflected in Austen’s personal collections and in her work. In this lecture on Jane Austen’s Emma\, join Grand Central Library and NYPL Music staff for a look into Jane Austen’s relationship with music and how it affected her writing.

SUMMARY:Clergy in the novels of Jane Austen
DESCRIPTION:To speak to us at this event\, we are delighted to welcome our member David Richardson who will give a talk on clergy in the novels of Jane Austen. David will speak about the part that clergy play in the novels written by the daughter of a parson\, and sister to two others. He will focus on five in particular: ‘the sybarite\, the suitors and the spouses’.He offers two questions that you might like to think about in advance: \n\n\n\n●How many Austen heroines fall in love with a clergyman? (Clue: remember the advice from schooldays – read the question carefully.)●Who are the two best-known clergymen in English fiction? (Clue: one is an Austen character; the other is not.) \n\n\n\nThis event will be free of charge. Please e-mail north@jasoc.org.uk to register interest and receive ID and passcode.

SUMMARY:Jane Austen at Home by Lucy Worsley

Through the houses\, places and possessions which mattered to her\, Lucy takes a fascinating look at Jane Austen’s world\, considers what home meant to Jane and to the women like her who populate her novels. Dispelling the myth of the cynical\, lonely spinster\, Lucy instead offers us a witty\, passionate and courageous woman\, who\, in her quiet way\, changed the world.

SUMMARY:Reading: "The Woman Hater" by Frances Burney
DESCRIPTION:Frances Burney’s rarely seen 18th century proto-feminist satire is a hilarious story of broken engagements\, excessive romanticism – and one massively misguided misogynist. Sir Roderick has turned frantic misogynist for two reasons: he was jilted 17 years previously and his sister had the gall to marry his ex-fiancee’s brother. Burney’s outrageously witty comedy of manners bursts into life with the introduction of the former fiancee\, Lady Smatter\, who has turned into a voracious and addle-brained bookworm. \n\n\n\nWith its unforgettable characters and delicious absurdity\, The Woman Hater is a lost comic treat. As directed by Everett Quinton (Red Bull’s The Mystery of Irma Vep and the Ridiculous Theatrical Company)\, it’s sure to be a doubly sweet one.
